Workshops Help Prepare Kids for State Testing

Alexandria, Virginia, April 5, 2006 -- SCORE! Educational Centers, Inc., a leading provider of after-school learning programs and a subsidiary of education and test preparation leader Kaplan, Inc., will host several free workshops on April 19 and 23rd to help parents understand Virginia's Standards of Learning (SOL) standardized tests and to provide tips for student success. Parents and kids do not have to be SCORE! members to attend. The free sessions will be held: Wednesday, April 19th 6:00 p.m. — SCORE! Oakton and SCORE! McLean 7:30 p.m. — SCORE! Fairfax Sunday, April 23rd 4:30 p.m. — Seven (7) SCORE! centers in Virginia (addresses at end of news release): Herndon, Falls Church, Springfield, McLean, Reston, Clifton and Alexandria 5:30 p.m. — SCORE! Fairfax "SCORE! cultivates a love of learning in children, and increases their self confidence," said Justin Serrano, president of SCORE!. "Our math and reading tutoring programs help children at all levels gain core skills for success on this important state test." All Virginia public school students in grades 3-8 must take the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) in math and reading every year to measure academic progress required under the federal No Child Left Behind Act. High school students must pass certain end of course SOL tests in order to graduate. The SCORE! workshops will provide information about what the SOL tests, how test results are used, and why the results are important for every child. SCORE!'s academic advisors also will lead parents to additional resources for sample test questions and information. In addition, the workshops will provide general test-taking tips, including strategy, suggestions for dealing with test anxiety and a timeline of activities to help children prepare the week before the test. Parents with gifted or talented children preparing for magnet school entrance exams or other relevant tests will also find these materials useful.
