The first step to a masterpiece is
master writing skills.
SCORE! takes one simple approach to the two crucial components of writing – The Writing Process and Content Quality. We feel the content of the writing is as important as the process of creating it and our tutors will help your child achieve both. Our approach to the writing process begins with both understanding the written words and planning before any writing ensues. This helps your child produce work that is sophisticated in language, organization, and subject matter.Content is the second part of the whole. There are six common traits that schools across the country look at when evaluating writing. SCORE! incorporates these traits in combination with the writing process.
The Writing Process:
- Inquiry: Critical thinking to identify goals and the purpose of writing
- Pre-write: Planning the content of the piece in an organized manner
- Draft: Creating the content of the piece
- Edit: Structural and organizational changes that help to clarify the flow, tone, and message of the piece
- Proofread: Attention to grammatical and spelling conventions that make the piece easy to read
- Publish: The look and presentation of the final piece
- Inquiry (revisited): Self-assessment of the writing and the writing piece
Content Quality Traits:
- Ideas: The heart of a piece. Ideas take the form of a specific, well-defined topic of appropriate scope with relevant and supporting details
- Organization: The structure of the piece. It's the scaffolding that ties all the ideas together in a clear and effective manner
- Word Choice: The rich and precise language that makes the piece expressive and engaging for the reader
- Voice: The style or tone unique to the writer that brings the topic to life or makes the reader understand the purpose of the writing
- Sentence Fluency: Helps authors imagine their work being read out loud and highlights attention to the pace and sound of the work
- Conventions: Encompass all the technical elements of writing, namely grammar, spelling, and punctuation
